Nackiyé

Basak and Defne Kocabiyikoglu were two sisters with successful careers in the fashion industry when they decided to honor their family heritage by creating something of their own. Defne worked as a trend forecaster and Basak as a buyer for a luxury boutique in the UK, but both felt the call of their Turkish roots and memories of 1980s Istanbul from their childhood. In 2018, they launched Nackiyé from their native Istanbul, naming the brand after their great-grandmother. The family history that inspired them goes back generations of extraordinary women: they came from a family of Ottoman bureaucrats who hosted artists, musicians, craftsmen, thinkers and Mevlevi dervishes. Their great-grandmother Nackiyé and her family belonged to a 14th-century Sufi lodge, and Nackiyé's own grandmother, Seyyare, was the first young girl in the Ottoman Empire to dance the mystic dervish ritual called Sema.
The sisters created a brand that celebrates the simple pleasures of the Eastern Mediterranean: the touch of silk on salty skin at dusk, gathering one's skirt to jump from ferry to dock, the tap of pearls against wooden tables during long lunches in Istanbul's lokantas. This cultural fluidity and delight are reflected in their designs: couture details, motifs and embroidery, fine tailoring, their approach to coastal summer dressing and knitwear.
Nackiyé produces individually designed artisanal garments that savor the charm of the Eastern Mediterranean. Each piece keeps traditional craftsmanship alive while being reinterpreted by each wearer, investing in enduring materials and artisan handwork in hidden ateliers in the Grand Bazaar.
